Didn't take long to find a new venue. London is an amazing city for live music, no matter how avant-garde it is.
We're now at Ryan's Bar in Stoke Newington N16 with a monthly jam until the end of the year, possibly progressing to twice a month in 2015. The first one is tonight, do show up! All welcome! Details here. A month of weekly free jams has come and gone and it's been great! Some evenings were quite intimate, i.e. just half-a-dozen musicians turning up and lots of space for solos and experimentation; some with over a dozen musicians, total chaos, but moments of beauty emerging through the confusion. Met loads of people, had a great time, would do it all over again!
Unfortunately, the Stag's Head is not available after October so the Improvisi jams are on the move again. Know any good places? Improvisi are hosting jam nights every Tuesday in October, likely extending into November and beyond.
They are open to all players, no set genre or idiom - just come and play. Music from 8pm but arrive earlier to help set it up. It'll be at: The Stag's Head 55 Orsman Rd N1 5RA London Special gig tomorrow for me at The Gunners. Not only is the night curated and headlined by Improvisi, it's also the day before my birthday. Since I have no other plans to celebrate it, the show will also double as my birthday party! So please come around for the music and to wish me a happy birthday!
Two cracking gigs last week with the A-Band and Improvisi on the same night (don't ask) and then live soundtrack playing in Cambridge.
Unfortunately, the two gigs I had booked for this month are not happening, at least for me: one was cancelled, and I can't attend the other one. Meanwhile I got my custom guitar back from the luthier who was making some improvements to it, mostly contouring the neck heel. Check it out. Had my first gig last week with Improvisi in which we had no woodwinds or brass at all. Scary! Only recording here and a poor one at that, but it all got predictably rock after a while. Was trying out a new pedal, the WMD Geiger Counter, for the first time live, and it's awesome! For next week I'm playing on Wednesday at the Rhythm Factory with both Improvisi and the A Band, then on Thursday I'm travelling to Cambridge to do a live soundtrack to a short film as part of the Romsey Art Festival. Completely different moods and gigs, but looking forward to both! Quick reminder that I'm playing at The Harrison at 28 Harrison Street, WC1H 8JF. More details here.
What's on the slate until the end of the year (more to come soon!)
19/9 @ The Gunners (Improvisi presents night with bands we pick) 28/8 @ The Good Ship 26/8 @ Arch1 21/8 @ Romsey Art Festival in Cambridge soundtracking live films 20/8 @ Rhythm Factory13/8 @ Water Rats 29/7 @ The Harrison ("Hole the Rabit Down" event) After the show last night at the Cavendish Arms, a guitarist who had played early and who had had his eyes on my fingers all the time, asked me what tuning I use. Standard tuning of course! But it's nice it doesn't sound like it!
Also I'm back playing at Arch1 on the 26th of august - one of the best venues in London for my kind of music. |
